Female Soccer All-Stars Return to Wilmington

January 29, 2009
Wilmington, NC –The Hammerheads, Wilmington’s professional soccer team, sets the stage for the first female professional soccer match in New Hanover County in seven years.

On Sunday, March 22nd at 2pm at Legion Stadium, the Washington Freedom returns to Wilmington to face the UNC Chapel Hill Tar Heels in a 2009 pre-season match-up. In 2002, Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom faced the Carolina Courage at Legion Stadium for an intense 90 minute battle that enthralled fans.

The Freedom coaching staff was looking for a venue outside of Women’s Professional Soccer to host a 2009 pre-season game. After an offer from long time friend and coach of the Wilmington Hammerheads, David Irving, coach Jim Gabarra of the Washington Freedom graciously accepted the invitation to play in Wilmington again.

Keep your eyes peeled for Freedom professional players including U.S. National Team veterans Abby Wambach, Cat Whitehill, and Briana Scurry in the match-up against the 2008 NCAA champions, UNC Chapel Hill.

Tickets are $5.00 for everyone; children 3 and under are free.
