Hammerheads Open 2009 Campaign Saturday
April 24, 2009
The Wilmington Hammerheads kick off their 14th season in the United Soccer League against the Charlotte Eagles this Saturday, April 25th. The Eagles will host the Hammerheads in Charlotte at Charlotte Christian Stadium at 2:00 pm. The season officially kicked off last weekend but this is the first game of the season for both clubs.

The Hammerheads were defeated three times by the Eagles last season. Two of those defeats were suffered at home by just one goal. The Hammerheads are seeking revenge by spoiling the Eagles home opener this season, something the Eagles did last year in the Hammerheads home opener. The Hammerheads went on to conclude the 2008 campaign with a regular season record of 4-9-7 and 19 points, finishing 7th in the USL 2nd division standings. The Eagles on the other hand finished last season with a 13-2-5 record and claimed the Regular Season Championship title.

It is going to be a battle for the Hammerheads but head coach David Irving, who is entering his 11th season as Hammerheads coach, and his players are up for the challenge. The two teams will meet again in Charlotte on May 8th and finish up the season series in Wilmington at Legion Stadium on the July 12th.

Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving commented “We have had a really good preseason and have made it through injury free. We are looking to get the 2009 season off to a good start.”

The Hammerheads home opener will be Saturday May 2nd at Legion Stadium when the Hammerheads host Crystal Palace Baltimore at 7:00pm.
