Hammerheads win in Penalty Kicks
Set to host Chicago Fire of MLS in Third Round

The Wilmington Hammerheads came away with a thrilling victory on Tuesday night against the Carolina Railhawks in the second round of the US Open Cup. The Hammerheads secured the win with a 4-3 advantage on penalty kicks.

The Hammerheads were on the board first with a goal in the 22nd minute by forward Chris Bagley where he was assisted by Jamie Watson. The Railhawks responded quickly with a goal in the 34th minute to make the score 1-1 which would conclude the scoring during regulation.
The Hammerheads were once again on top in the 2nd minute of the first over time with a goal by defender Tim Karalexis to gain a 2-1 advantage. But, once again the Railhawks responded with a goal in the 8th minute to tie the game at 2-2. During the second overtime period the Railhawks scored with two minutes remaining to take a 3-2 lead. But, the Hammerheads never gave up and Kenny Bundy was able to put one in the back of the net in the final seconds of overtime to bring the score to 3-3.
The game then went to penalty kicks. Hammerheads goalkeeper Daryl Sattler saved the Railhawks first PK and then the Hammerheads would score on their next four PK attempts. Sattler then again saved the Railhawks PK in the 5th round to give the Hammerheads a 4-3 PK advantage and the victory.
The Hammerheads are now set to host the Chicago Fire of the MLS in the third round of the open cup. This game will take place at Legion Stadium on Tuesday, June 30th at 7:00pm.
