Hammerheads edged by Eagles

July 2, 2009
The Charlotte Eagles soared into Wilmington on Thursday with determination and a desired victory over their inner league rivals. In lieu of a victory over the Chicago Fire in a 1-0 match on Tuesday night, the Hammerheads hit the field slow and tired. Goalkeeper Daryl Sattler suffered a tweak to his lingering sports hernia leaving the defense in the hands of Kyle Polak.  Polak was clearly prepared, making several key saves and giving the Hammerheads a spark for the first time in the game.

“I have been waiting for this chance for so long,” said Polak. “Let’s just say I was ready.”
Wilmington showed some signs of success as forward Jamie Watson rocketed a shot finding the back of the net. He had a PK opportunity as halftime climbed closer but failed to put it past the Eagles’ protector of the nest.
The Hammerheads still had trouble establishing their identity, letting the Eagles get up on them 3-1 before the half.
As the crowd remained hopeful, so did the Hammerheads. As if the fireworks had been prematurely launched the Hammerheads hit the field with a much needed spark.
Coach David Irving commented on the halftime speech.
“ It’s been a great week for the players and the club, I told them that we were out playing them, out hustling them, we just needed to capitalize on our chances.”
Phil Hufstader caught the keeper of guard in the 60th minute off of a beautiful assist from midfielder Kenny Bundy.
The Hammerheads continued to own the second half, missing the goal by inches on more than one instance.
As the players and fans stared into the gloomy sky for a magnificent fireworks display after the match, it was clear that this game was only a minor bump in the road. The team’s confidence was still wholesome as they prepare for a huge open cup tournament game on Tuesday in Rochester.
