Two familiar foes are facing off at Legion Stadium this Friday as Wilmington takes on the Real Maryland Monarchs. The 2nd half of the USL-2 season has begun and teams are jocking for standing positions to make the playoffs. The Hammerheads are currently 3rd place in the standings with 23 points but Real Maryland is just under them holding down 4th place with 21 points. The match Friday night will be huge in the USL-2 standings.
These two clubs have met before earlier this season when Wilmington traveled to Maryland and came home with a 3-0 victory. The Monarchs head coach, Anthony Hudson, is especially looking to avenge this loss since he was with the Hammerheads for the 2007 and 2008 seasons as the assistant coach. This Friday will be his first return to Wilmington since his departure with the Hammerheads at the end of last season. The Hammerheads are entering the match having won three out of their last four league matches while the Monarchs are on their own little winning streak having won their last two games.
Friday’s match will not be the last time these two teams will meet this season; they also have another game to play at Legion Stadium the last week of the season on Wednesday, August 12th. This game is set to kickoff at 7:00pm. Tickets may be purchased at the Legion Stadium ticket office beginning at 5:00pm.
