The Hammerheads 2009 season came to an end on tonight with a 1-0 loss to the Charlotte Eagles in the semifinals of the playoffs. The Hammerheads had already clinched the regular season and had a quest for a championship but it just did not seem in the books for them tonight.

With a victory Saturday the Hammerheads would clinch the 2009 USL 2 regular season and earn the number one seed for the playoffs.

The Richmond Kickers walked into Wilmington on Wednesday in a game that could be a huge deterrent as both squads fight for first place in the USL Second Division. The theme of the evening was defense and both teams struggled to get behind the opposing defensive wall.

The Charlotte Eagles soared into Wilmington on Thursday with determination and a desired victory over their inner league rivals. In lieu of a victory over the Chicago Fire in a 1-0 match on Tuesday night, the Hammerheads hit the field slow and tired. Goalkeeper Daryl Sattler suffered a tweak to his lingering sports hernia leaving the defense in the hands of Kyle Polak.

On a picture perfect night for soccer in Wilmington, The Hammerheads hosted the Chicago Fire as part of the U.S. Open cup tournament. This was the first time the Hammerheads have hosted a MLS squad since their loss to the New York Red Bulls in 2006. On this night however, the Hammerheads showed no fear in a physical battle to say the least.

The Hammerheads travel to Baltimore Saturday to face off with Crystal Palace. Wilmington is looking to continue their two-game win streak they have going into Saturday’s match. The Hammerheads had a 1-0 victory over Bermuda last Friday and a 2-0 victory Tuesday against the Charlotte Eagles in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup.

The two teams have already met twice this season with one game ending in a tie and the Hammerheads winning the other 6-3. They are also scheduled to play on July 2^nd at Legion Stadium as part of the USL2 regular season.

The Hammerheads faced Bermuda again on Sunday night at the National Stadium. This was the second of two meetings between these two teams in just three days. After a 0-0 tie on Friday night the Hammerheads came away Sunday with a 1-0 victory. This victory moved them back to the top of the USL Second Division standings with 11 points.

The Hammerheads and Hogges kicked off the first of two matches on Friday night in Bermuda. The Hammerheads and Bermuda were both coming off back to back victories in the past two weeks. This game would end scoreless with each team collecting one point for the standings.

The Wilmington Hammerheads kick off their 14^th season in the United Soccer League against the Charlotte Eagles this Saturday, April 25^th. The Eagles will host the Hammerheads in Charlotte at Charlotte Christian Stadium at 2:00 pm. The season officially kicked off last weekend but this is the first game of the season for both clubs.
